I have been throughly enjoying the latest releases from Antelope, Frog Eyes and Menomena. Each has a distinct sound, that is nothing like the last.
- Antelope’s Reflector is full of sparse, twangy, chunky instrumentation that is a pleasant departure from the current trend of orchestral-ish rock bands, producing one of my favorites albums of the year thus far. Check out Justin Jesus (LISTEN).
- Frog Eyes is, uh, Frog Eyes. There’s nothing like Carey Mercer and his overwhelming (in a good way) vocals. Tears of the Valedictorian is no exception, in what is likely their most “accessible” release to date. Stockades (LISTEN) is a good example.
- Menomena and the buzz that has been going on around them is not without merit. Friend and Foe is a winding road made up of an interesting mix of guitar, baritone sax, piano, drums and vocals that keep the album fresh at each turn. Wet & Rusting seems to be download-able all over the place, listen to Muscle’n Flo (LISTEN).
